Interview with 18Fevers
What’s the meaning of 18Fevers?
Fevers in this context is extreme excitement and emotional interest.
Why 18? Because 19 is too many, and 17 is not enough! 18 can sound like a bad word in Korean too so it has a punk legacy in Korea dating back to some of the early bands using it out of rebellion so it’s a nice shout out to that concept.
Name of the members. Who is the composer and lyricist?
Matt - bassist - tech genius
Christmas - vocals - guitar - emotion
YuHee - Vampire - guitar - soul
Garik - drums - swag
When did the band start?
September 2021
How did you meet each other?
The punk/underground scene in Korea is very small so everyone knows each other pretty well and people recommend others to you to form bands. A mutual friend introduced Christmas and Matt who were in previous bands who found Garik on Craigslist. Later YuHee found out from a friend that we needed a lead guitarist so she completed us.
How many albums/singles do you have?
5 song EP, 4 members, 3 singles, 2 badass women, and a partridge in a pear tree.
What does your lyrics talks about?
We like to bring up social and political issues that affect us and typically deal with underrepresented people being treated fairly or critiques of social norms and social systems. Human rights like LGBTQ and racism, feminism, mental health, shitty politicians, and generally telling stories that interest us are what we focus on. We are angry and our lyrics can be dark but also positive and we enjoy having fun. You’re allowed to be angry but also express other emotions.
What are your plans, musically?
Keep evolving, keep exploring what we can do musically , maybe release a full length in the future but the release landscape is so strange these days with streaming platforms being so dominant. We love making music videos though so we will keep doing that as well. Definitely keep touring anywhere that will have us. We’re heading to Japan a few times in 2024 and back to the UK in Summer of 2024.
Which song are you the most attached to out of all your tracks?
I love Gatekeeper as well. A little groove, a little thrash, a little build up. It’s a fun song to play~
Save your Venom is really fun to play live so it’s probably my favorite right now.
What is your favorite quote or saying?
We mostly just quote our drummer Garik so we have classics such as:
“You know what I’m saying?”
“You ‘bout to die!”
“You trippin’ ”
And “It’s actually very technical.”
What stirs your sense of creativity?
Expression is important. Expression from every band member is essential for us. Our songs aren’t done until everybody has a say and puts their fingerprints on the song.
The city of Seoul inspires us in good and bad ways. Our bassist travels the city a lot for work and sees many areas and aspects of the city, its people and their stories. Also when people try to put us down, stop us from doing what we want or hate on us it inspires us to crush them and shut them up.
Which song would you recommend to anyone who may not be familiar with your music?
Dance Macabre - it’s a balance of fun and aggression.
What is your favourite food and beverage?
Dr. Pepper
We love pickle back shots! A shot of whiskey with a shot of pickle juice as the chaser. And we drink a lot of soju and beer.
Where do you see yourself doing in 10 years?
Still making music and hanging out together would be the dream. Being able to make a living from music would be the ultimate dream.
A message to the fans/readers?
Come have fun with us at a live show! We love connecting with any crowd and being free in the music. Being able to share our gifts with others is amazing. And if someone falls in the pit, pick them up! If people don’t like “loud” music they should try and give it a chance. Just because it’s loud doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a range of emotions or that it can’t make you feel good and positive. Loud music can light your heart on fire and also stay in your head to get you through life.
