Interview with 1/N
Today, we have the pleasure of chatting with 1/N, an indie band that has been captivating listeners with their heartfelt music and unique perspective. From their humble beginnings as a school band at Dongguk University to becoming seasoned musicians, 1/N continues to create music that resonates deeply with their fans. In this interview, we explore their journey, creative process, and what’s next for the band.
1.How did 1/N come together, and what inspired the name?
We were friends back when we were students at Dongguk University. We started as a school band, and after completing our military service, we named our band “1/N” and began making music more professionally.
It took us one day to decide on our band’s name, and we all liked it immediately after we heard it. 1/N means sharing our roles, duties, and youth equally.
2.How would you describe your music in a few words?
Our way of seeing the world.
3.What’s your songwriting process like?
If one person drafts a version of a song, the other members build upon it and finish it together. Most of the time, the melody and lyrics don’t change, but other elements evolve as we make music together. We try to create a demo version on our own before heading into the studio so that we know exactly what we want to do and how to do it.
4.Which artists or bands inspire your sound?
There are so many artists that inspire us: Coldplay, The 1975, Kodaline, Nell, AC/DC, U2…
5.Has your music style evolved since you started?
We believe so. We didn’t notice it right away, but as we look back and listen to the songs we released in our 20s, we can see the difference. I think our music grows older as we do—it becomes more mature and deeper. At least, I hope so.
6.What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced as an indie band?
Same as all other indie musicians, the biggest challenge is money. We love what we do, and we would love to keep doing it as long as we can. But if we don’t face reality, it’s impossible to continue making music. So we try to earn money in many ways (we also run a café together!) so that we can keep our band going.
7.Any memorable fan moments you’d like to share?
Going hiking with our fans. This year, we’ve been to two mountains with them. After hiking, we had meals together and shared a great time. We like these kinds of events because they make us feel much closer to our fans on a personal level.
8.If you each had to pick one favorite song, what would it be?
Myung Su - Whale
Sung Kyu - Woodstock
Soon Woo - Blue Spring
Ye Hyun - Stars of You
Hoon - Blue Spring
9.What’s next for 1/N any upcoming projects or goals?
We have a concert on December 14th. At the end of every year, we hold a concert that we put the most effort into. It’s our last concert of the year, so we are looking forward to it.
10.What do you hope fans feel when they hear your music?
We hope everyone can enjoy and feel our music in their own way.
11.What are the favorite tracks in the album?
Myung Su - Resonance
Sung Kyu - SAY IT!
Soon Woo - Resonance
Ye Hyun - SAY IT!
Hoon - Blue Wave
Thank you to 1/N for sharing their insights with us today. It’s clear that their music is a reflection of their journey, and their dedication to their craft is truly inspiring. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for the band. Make sure to check out their upcoming concert and continue supporting their music. Keep an eye on 1/N—they’re just getting started!
